It takes a lot of work to write dumb.  You would think it wouldn’t, but it do.  I like Chuy, he’s sweet, not too bright, but a lot of fun.  His attitude is infectious and his charm is indefensible.  He’s going to be a joy to have in the story.

In other news, a lot has happened in the last month – I think I’m starting to finally recover.  I’m considering starting a journal just for my progress on making this comic a career (I’m certain it will be a somewhat long process).  In the few months that I’ve been doing this, I’ve already had quite a few amazing triumphs, and some very hard realizations .   I’m still not sure how I should go about presenting it.  Realizations often involve a lot of deeply intimate reflections, and its been a long time since I’ve been that open with people.  But I’m starting to feel this is something that I need to do.

Anyways, I’ll update more later.

Hmmmm?  What’s this all about?

No colors on todays strip… at least till I can get it done.  I made it up to the studio about 10 with the finished inked comic strip, only to realize my studio mate took the laptop home for the night.   Hopefully I can get it done tomorrow.  A couple weeks back, my home computer got a virus and died, so I’m sort of living out of my flash drive for now.  It is, what it is.

By the way… if I had a dollar for every time someone told me they “can’t even draw stick figures” I would be a very rich man now.  Haha.

I believe this is the first time we see Elysium sketching.  Unless you got one of my early Super Zeroes sketchbooks a while back.  We also see our newest character here.  We’ll meet him tomorrow.  And of course there’s Ely’s car, originally I wanted her car to be multi-colored, red white and blue.  But as I started coloring these strips, I realized that was a little more work than I’m up to right now.

Oooh… Mystery.  Who is dreamgirl?  What is wonderwut?  How fast can a bulldog fly?!  These are all questions I hope to play with in the next chapter of Super Zeroes!

This page was supposed to go up on Friday, but as you can see its longer than normal.  Its actually two pages put together.  I wasn’t able to get them both finished till tonight.  I didn’t want to break up the action between two separate days and lose the impact of revealing Elysium as Dreamgirl.  I hope it was worth the wait.

As I mentioned, this concludes the first chapter of Super Zeroes.  I’ll be going back to the strip format for a while, at least until the story calls for something different.  Full pages are exhausting.  I am actually going to take the next week off from the strip to finish getting everything ready for the West Texas Comic-Con.  I nearly lost my mind last week trying to pull all-nighters to do the strip along with everything that needs to be done to run this comic book convention.  I’m thankful I have such an awesome partner helping to run the show.  He’s really made this one happen.

I got another piece of Fanart this weekend!  This time from an artist named Lindsay Gragowski!  People seem to really love Wonderwut and Potato!  It makes me happy to see everyone enjoying the story so much.  If you have any fanart you want to send, I will be creating a Fanart section in the next couple of weeks.

Hey look at that!  A new character!  Just like that.  And Elysium actually surfs! Its nice to have a friend that snaps you out of it when you’re thinking too much.  You’re in the ocean, you should feel weightless, not all heavy with worries about what might or might not happen.  Her friends name is Kinishua, by the way.  She’s half Japanese, half black, all awesome.

I like how the water turned out on this strip.  Inking with a Brush is really good for doing waves like that.  So far this is my favorite strip.

I’m trying something new for me with these colors.  Usually when I do comics I leave the line art b/w and simply add the color beneath.  But for these strips I’ve been trying “line-holds”, or “knock-outs” as they’re sometimes called.  Basically I cut out the lineart of the main character and change the line color to match the skin-tone.  It makes for a much softer illustration I think.  Sometimes it seems to work really well.  Others, not so much.  I have a feeling my art style will be changing a lot as I do more strips.  So far the response has been good, and I appreciate everyone’s feedback.

I think, also, it will take a little while to get used to writing for comic strips.  How to pace the jokes, the subject matter, and character development.  Right now I’m basically writing whatever comes to mind, while trying to build towards something.   But I could see myself getting into some really fun crafting of jokes and set-ups for bigger and funnier stories.  I see this first year as a learning process for those things. That and meeting daily deadlines each week.

How do you like those waves?  I miss San Diego.  That’s probably why I decided to start this story off in the ocean.  That’s the nice part about being an artist is you can go any place you like.  Right now I’d really like to be riding a wave.

I want to thank everyone that stopped by yesterday.  I had a little over 200 unique visitors for the first go-round!  What makes it strange though, is that after writing/penciling/inking and coloring these strips over the last few weeks, I’ve read them so many times that I can’t even tell if they’re funny anymore.  I try to remind myself that I laughed the first few times I read them, so hopefully you will too.  That’s the hardest part about doing anything creative, is trying not to get too insecure about your work before you even get the chance to put it out there.

Anyways, thank you all for stopping by.  I hope you’ll stick around to see where this is going.

Well Friends…  this is the beginning.  I want to thank you for being patient with me.

I have been working on Super Zeroes in one form or another since 2005.  Its’ changed a lot in that time – as I have changed a lot.  There are many reasons for why it took so long.  But I won’t bore you with the details.  What it comes down to, is that even though I am constantly encouraging others to follow their passion, I myself have settled for comfort, instead of confronting all the fears and insecurities that come with finally putting something you’re passionate about into the world.  In fact, as I’ve been working on these strips and the site and other aspects for the series the last few weeks, its basically been my full time workload.  And last night it finally occurred to me  that in all my years of doing comics full time, this is the first time I have passionately worked on my own story as though it were my only job.  I can’t begin to describe how amazing that feels.

I believe that we are all meant to live passionate lives… to do what we Love with all of our hearts, and do it in a way that makes other people’s lives better.  And if you can align those two things, with a way to make a living – that is your dream job.  So as much as this story means to me, it is also for you my friends.  I may not know you, but I know that you deserve to experience love and joy and to live your own passionate life.  This comic is my way of bringing a little love and joy into your life.  I hope that it makes you smile and laugh and want to come back each day for more.  And in the end… I hope that it makes your life a little better.
