It takes a lot of work to write dumb.  You would think it wouldn’t, but it do.  I like Chuy, he’s sweet, not too bright, but a lot of fun.  His attitude is infectious and his charm is indefensible.  He’s going to be a joy to have in the story.

In other news, a lot has happened in the last month – I think I’m starting to finally recover.  I’m considering starting a journal just for my progress on making this comic a career (I’m certain it will be a somewhat long process).  In the few months that I’ve been doing this, I’ve already had quite a few amazing triumphs, and some very hard realizations .   I’m still not sure how I should go about presenting it.  Realizations often involve a lot of deeply intimate reflections, and its been a long time since I’ve been that open with people.  But I’m starting to feel this is something that I need to do.

Anyways, I’ll update more later.

Hmmmm?  What’s this all about?

No colors on todays strip… at least till I can get it done.  I made it up to the studio about 10 with the finished inked comic strip, only to realize my studio mate took the laptop home for the night.   Hopefully I can get it done tomorrow.  A couple weeks back, my home computer got a virus and died, so I’m sort of living out of my flash drive for now.  It is, what it is.

By the way… if I had a dollar for every time someone told me they “can’t even draw stick figures” I would be a very rich man now.  Haha.

I believe this is the first time we see Elysium sketching.  Unless you got one of my early Super Zeroes sketchbooks a while back.  We also see our newest character here.  We’ll meet him tomorrow.  And of course there’s Ely’s car, originally I wanted her car to be multi-colored, red white and blue.  But as I started coloring these strips, I realized that was a little more work than I’m up to right now.

I tried to post this last night… but I could hardly keep it together.  I lost a very good friend this weekend.  I lost my mentor.  His name was Mark Ruzicka and he was an incredible man.  He was one of my biggest supporters, in fact it was his advertisement that I posted last week.  And it was also his encouragement and advice that finally got me to start this story after clinging to the ledge for many many years.

In a world where most people are too preoccupied with their own lives and success… he was a successful man, who thought mostly about encouraging others.  He lived, the way I believe God would like us all to live.  Fully, passionately, lovingly, and intentionally.  He saw potential in me, when I barely believed in it myself.  He blessed my life with wisdom that I reflect on every single day.  And I was only one of the countless people he helped along the way.  He blessed the lives of every person he came into contact with.  I have lost a great friend, and this world has lost a great champion.

But in spite of all the tears and sadness… I can only think of how lucky I was to be blessed by this man’s life.  I can only pray, to someday be as loving and encouraging as he was in his very full and beautiful life.  The essence of dreaming is seeing that which is not real, as though it were, and believing enough in it to make it real.  He was a dreamer.  And his dreams made the world a better place.

God Bless you Mark.  I will miss you very much.

This is an ad I did this weekend for the back of the first issue of Super Zeroes.  I normally don’t like putting ads in my books.  But this one is from a friend, and it helped pay to print the book.  The ad is for “Hard Tops” bathtub refinishing.  And the punchline is “Need your Tub repaired?”  I thought it was funny.

The West Texas Comic Con has come and gone.  I am exhausted, and spent most of the last couple days in a Con Coma.  The event went off very well.  Our attendance was a little lower than expected, but still great.  Everyone had a great time, including (and most importantly) our guests.  We heard from almost all of our guests and creators that they made more at our show than they did at Wizard World Texas.  And even better, the attendees were enthusiastic and enjoyable in a way they hadn’t seen at many cons.  Bottom line, we made a great impression, and we have a lot to work with for future shows.

I also got to chat some with Josh Howard, whom I’ve come to admire a lot over the years, and I really enjoyed hosting the writers panel with him, Dirk Strangely, Matthew Sturges, Paul Benjamin and Scott Zirkel.  I had a lot of people tell me that was their favorite part of the convention.

I also got to spend a lot of time with my friend Chris Nicholas (Uncle Staple) and Joel Watson (Hijinks Ensue), who filled my brain with all sorts of helpful insight into making webcomics for a living.  I can’t thank him enough for all the info and encouragement!  He and I will both be at DWEX this weekend in Dallas!  Hope to see some of you there!
